1. Accepting These Terms
By creating a Melo account, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree to these terms, please don't use Melo.
2. Eligibility
To use Melo, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a current student at a U.S. college or university
- Have a valid .edu email address
- Be legally able to enter into a binding contract
- Not be prohibited from using the service under U.S. law
- Not have been previously banned from Melo
3. Your Account
Account Creation
You must provide accurate and complete information when creating your account. You're responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials.
One Account Per Person
You may only create one Melo account. Creating multiple accounts may result in termination of all your accounts.
Account Security
You're responsible for all activity that occurs under your account. Notify us immediately if you suspect unauthorized access.
4. Profile Content & Conduct
Prohibited Content
You may not post, share, or send content that:
- Is false, misleading, or fraudulent
- Contains nudity or sexually explicit material
- Is hateful, threatening, or promotes violence
- Harasses, bullies, or intimidates others
- Infringes on others' intellectual property rights
- Contains spam or advertising
- Promotes illegal activity
- Includes minors (under 18)
Prohibited Behavior
You agree not to:
- Impersonate anyone or provide false information
- Stalk, harass, or abuse other users
- Request money or financial information from other users
- Use Melo for commercial purposes without permission
- Scrape, copy, or harvest data from the platform
- Reverse engineer or attempt to access our source code
- Use bots, scripts, or automated tools
- Interfere with the proper functioning of Melo
5. Photo Verification
To maintain authenticity and safety, all users must complete photo verification. This helps ensure you are who you claim to be. Failure to complete verification or attempting to bypass verification may result in account suspension.
6. Content Rights
Your Content
You retain ownership of content you post on Melo. By posting content, you grant Melo a worldwide, non-exclusive license to use, display, and distribute your content for the purpose of operating and improving the service.
Content Removal
We reserve the right to remove any content that violates these Terms or our community guidelines, without notice.
7. Premium Subscriptions
Premium Features
Melo offers optional premium subscriptions that provide additional features like:
- Unlimited daily recommendations
- See who liked you without blur
- Extra date idea options
- Calendar integration
- Profile visibility boosts
- Read receipts
Billing
Premium subscriptions auto-renew unless you cancel before the renewal date. You can cancel anytime in your account settings. No refunds for partial months.
Changes to Premium
We may change premium pricing or features with 30 days notice. Changes won't affect your current subscription period.
8. Advertising
Melo displays advertisements to support our free service. By using Melo, you agree that:
- We may display third-party advertisements throughout the platform
- Ads may be personalized based on your profile information, interests, and activity
- We may share certain information with advertising partners as described in our Privacy Policy
- Ad content is provided by third parties and Melo is not responsible for their accuracy or claims
- Clicking on ads may redirect you to external websites not controlled by Melo
- Premium subscribers may see fewer ads or have an ad-free experience, as specified in their subscription tier
You can opt out of personalized advertising through your device settings, though you may still see non-personalized ads.
9. Safety & Dating
Important safety information:
- Meet Safely: Always meet in public places for first dates
- Tell Someone: Use our friend-sharing feature to share date details
- Trust Your Instincts: If something feels wrong, it probably is
- No Guarantee: Melo is not responsible for the conduct of users offline
- Background Checks: We verify student status but do not conduct criminal background checks
- Emergency: Call 911 if you're in immediate danger
10. Termination
By You
You can delete your account at any time through the app settings.
By Us
We may suspend or terminate your account if you:
- Violate these Terms of Service
- Violate our community guidelines
- Engage in fraudulent or illegal activity
- Create risk or legal exposure for Melo
- Repeatedly receive user complaints
11. Disclaimers
Melo is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. We don't guarantee:
- That you'll find a match or go on dates
- The accuracy of personality matching algorithms
- That the service will be uninterrupted or error-free
- The conduct or identity of other users
- That date suggestions will meet your expectations
- The accuracy or quality of third-party advertisements
12. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Melo shall not be liable for:
- Any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages
- Loss of profits, data, or goodwill
- Conduct or content of users, whether online or offline
- Unauthorized access to your account
- Third-party advertisements or external websites
Our total liability shall not exceed the amount you paid to Melo in the past 12 months, or $100, whichever is greater.
13. Dispute Resolution
Informal Resolution
If you have a dispute with Melo, please contact us first at melo.dating/contact so we can try to resolve it informally.
Arbitration
Any disputes that can't be resolved informally will be resolved through binding arbitration rather than in court, except you may assert claims in small claims court if they qualify.
Class Action Waiver
You agree to resolve disputes with Melo on an individual basis and waive your right to participate in class actions or class arbitrations.
14. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, without regard to conflict of law provisions.
15. Changes to These Terms
We may modify these Terms at any time. If we make material changes, we'll notify you via email or in-app notification at least 30 days before they take effect. Your continued use of Melo after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
16. General
- Entire Agreement: These Terms constitute the entire agreement between you and Melo
- Severability: If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect
- No Waiver: Our failure to enforce any right doesn't waive that right
- Assignment: You may not transfer these Terms; we may assign them without restriction
